| Frances Greene being interviewed for the Central Texas Gardener show |
DOVE is dedicated to Frances Greene, my amazing mother, who, when she wasn't busy keeping hospital patients free of infections or pursuing a doctorate in epidemiology, was growing backyard vegetables or serving home-cooked meals to her family.
For several years, she picked up unsold bread and delivered loads of loaves to feed Houston's hungry, with my ailing dad as her bread route companion.
These days, she tends gardens that are part of Austin's Urban Patchwork program, and teaches kids at the local elementary school about food-growing in their outdoor classroom (the school's vegetable garden).
Mom, you were my first teacher, about food and everything else that's important, and my gratitude is immeasurable. I love you. — JG
